aurora noun a shifting, streaming display of light As the sun set, Mary enjoyed the colorful aurora over the ocean.

by- A prefix meaning “near” or “aside” Columns in a Greek temple stand near or aside each other. This illustrates the concept behind the prefix “by-” (see the next three vocabulary words.)

bypass verb to avoid (go past) If a runner chooses to bypass second base, he’s out! noun an alternate route Take the south bypass around I-5.

byproduct noun something produced as the result of the manufacture of some- thing else Buttermilk is a byproduct of churning butter.

bystander noun someone who observes, but does not participate The witness to the crime was just an innocent bystander

chronic adjective lasting a long time; constant; recurring Chronic pneumonia can be dangerous to one’s well-being.

clairvoyant adjective having exceptional insight The fortune teller appeared to be clairvoyant.

commiserate verb to sympathize with; to feel sorrow for another’s suffering He could commiserate with her, having lost a pet himself.

deference noun great respect The students showed deference to their teacher.

demeanor noun behavior The child’s demeanor was shocking to the bystanders.

undulate verb to move in a smooth, wavelike motion The jellyfish undulated through the water.
