Presentation transcript:

CHEATING “failure to appreciate the value of education” Students don’t come to school with a full appreciation of the “value to themselves of serious and conscientious intellectual effort and achievement”

Questions Discuss the following questions with the people beside you: What is the purpose of learning? What is the purpose of school? What is the purpose of comprehension questions, quizzes, tests, and summative projects? What are reasons for someone to cheat? Does it benefit you in the long run? Are you retaining the information that you are copying from?

Examples of Cheating Hiring someone to write a paper Buying a paper or a project Sharing files Copying homework Building on someone else’s ideas without proper citations Letting your partner do all of the work Turning in someone else’s work Looking at someone else’s test Turning in your brother or sister’s old work

How does technology come in to play? Are technological devices helpful or are they hindering you as a student in terms of retaining knowledge, focusing, and decreasing your willpower to cheat?

Parental Expectations -According to recent research 81% of students admit to cheating because high pressure was placed on them by their parents -Little or no pressure for success creates far fewer circumstances for cheating

Plagiarism Definition Plagiarism is cheating or deception: -If you attempt to use another person’s work as if it were your own, without adequate acknowledgment of the original source. If this is done in work that you submit for a grade, then you are attempting to deceive your teacher, your parents, or anyone reading the work that you submitted. In other words, plagiarism is cheating and it is deceitful because you are trying to claim the credit for something that is not your own work.

What can we do to resolve the problem? Brainstorm different ways that you think that we could solve issues with cheating with the people beside you. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6)
