March, 2003 Tutorial 4 Pulse~LINK Inc. Doc: 03008r0P802-19_Coexistence of Multiple UWB PHY Layers Coexistence UWB coexistence traditionally is concerned with UWB Tx to Narrow- Band Rx. Coexistence is defined as “the ability of one system to perform a task in a given shared environment where other systems may or may not be using the same set of rules”.[1] What about coexistence of multiple UWB Air Interfaces? –We need some form of “Etiquette” to manage peaceful UWB coexistence of different UWB PHY layers –What we do today could potentially set the path for UWB evolution for decades to come. Lets not have our rush to market force us into compromises or positions we will regret later. –A framework that addresses guidelines on “what spectrum” is accessed and “when”. A common discovery protocol can act as the arbitrator that insures this happens in a manner that minimizes interference and interaction at the PHY layer.

We have a Once-in-a lifetime opportunity to define an emerging wireless standard on a potential global scale. Let’s use this opportunity to address coexistence and interoperability as a part of the standard instead of as an after thought. As an example, the unlicensed ISM bands have experienced explosive growth with multiple PHY layer interfaces being defined. In the ISM 2.4 GHz band, there are no less than five different PHY standards competing for coexistence in the same spectrum. (802.11b, , , Bluetooth and Cordless Phones) UWB is gaining momentum and it is likely that multiple UWB based PHY layers will come into usage. Already a and are looking at UWB based PHY’s.

A “lowest common denominator” UWB operational mode common to ALL UWB air interfaces A methodology for allowing multiple different UWB PHY layers to coexist in the same coverage areas through cooperative management of the allocated PHY resources of time and frequency.
