The Settlement in the 1860s After Seven Oaks, relative peace for a long time Canada became a dominion Rising population in Canada caused many people to move west – Red River had the best farming land Most new Canadians were Protestant members of the Orange Order (Violently anti-French, anti- Catholic movement) Against the Métis
Dr. John Schultz Never completed his medical degree Opened general store, took over NorWester newspaper Championed Canadian interested by agitating Metis Used his newspaper to inspire hatred against the Metis Wanted to over take then and gain political power in the Settlement
Schultz: “The Métis should either be driven form the country or kept as cart drivers” At the time economic problems rise because of crop failures Problems were going to arise as the Metis had not made any legal claims to the land of the Red River Settlement
Canada Purchases Rupert ’ s Land In BNA act, fathers of Confederation stated the eventual take over of Rupert ’ s land HBC wanted to get rid of it…too hard to control THAT much land Negotiations for transfer occurred HBC did not consult the people living in the settlement to see what they wanted while making deals
Rupert ’ s Land Continued Agreement made November 1869 Canadian government received title and renamed it and the North-Western Territory… The North-West Territories HBC received in cash: 1.5 million dollars $$$$$$ 2.8 million hectares of prairie farmland Right to continue fur trade (no monopoly) Canadian surveyors arrived in Red River and began laying out townships (no regard for people already present)
More Agitation Canada sends in English land surveyors, who are looking to implement the grid system on the Red River Much like in Upper and Lower Canada, the settlement ran on the Seigneurial system and was established to run that way Canada was going to force change on the Metis
Louis Riel Makes An Appearance Just as this is occurring, 24 year old lawyer Louis Riel has returned to the settlement just in time to lead the Metis people Riel was living in Montreal, Chicago, and St Paul before returning In 1870 he leads the Metis on a Rebellion against Canada Next class
