7Maintenance, Inspection and Testing of Critical Equipment OBJECTIVE: To develop and implement a Maintenance, Inspection and Testing Program (MITP) for critical equipment in ports and terminals in order to secure their functioning in a safe and efficient manner and reduce the downtime required for repair or replacement. PROJECT TYPE AND DURATION: National project 2 years 1

7Maintenance, Inspection and Testing of Critical Equipment JUSTIFICATION: Insufficient knowledge about testing and maintenance of critical equipment Need to have cost reductions related to fewer breakdowns of equipment Improved safety du to more reliable equipment Need for training of operational staff as well management Insufficient government inspection procedures 2

7 Maintenance, Inspection and Testing of Critical Equipment 3

OUTPUTS: 1.Critical equipment for handling dangerous goods (DG) for ports/terminals identified (register of DG critical equipment prepared). These shall include characteristic descriptions and explanations on the functions. 2.Maintenance, inspection and testing requirements and procedures for DG critical equipment revised and/or developed based on manufacturer’s recommendations, recognized international standards and generally accepted engineering best practices. 3.Training program for relevant authorities and port/terminal operators and personnel involved in the maintenance, inspection and testing program. 4.Two ports/terminals selected for pilot projects testing of the Maintenance, Inspection and Testing Program 4

7Maintenance, Inspection and Testing of Critical Equipment KEY ACTIVITIES Typical “critical equipment” are identified and described regarding relevant functions and guidelines for maintenance, inspection and testing procedures are prepared Training programs for port and terminal operators as well as government staff are prepared and carried out Pilot projects for ports and terminals are implemented and the guidelines and procedures analysed 5
