“Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.” ROOTS OF PERSONALITY ROOTS OF PERSONALITY Where does your personality come from?  Heredity  Environment Can a person change his/her personality? People have the ability to mold their personalities, to change them to some degree, and to become more the individuals they want to be.

ELEMENTS OF PERSONALITY There are three elements to our personality:  EMOTIONAL  SOCIAL  INTELLECTUAL

A. Emotional Fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, anticipation, joy and acceptance. Emotions are often the most obvious elements of your personality. They strongly affect how others see you. They are easily seen but often misinterpreted. Example: Someone with a fearful nature may be thought of as arrogant until known better. First impressions are often deceiving.

How to control emotions: 1.Identify the emotion that is causing the problem: try to pinpoint what you are feeling. 2. Identify the cause of the emotion: (person, event, job) 3. List what you can do to manage the emotion. 4. Take the necessary steps 5. Evaluate the outcome

B. SOCIAL TRAITS How you relate to others.  Introvert: Someone who gets their energy from within Tend to prefer activities that allow them to concentrate on what might be called the “inner” life…reading, listening to music, sketching, solo hobbies, etc. Appreciation for time spent alone.  Extrovert: Someone who gets their energy from others Prefer the company of people to that of being alone.. Enjoy team sports, performing for an audience, taking part in discussions.

Most mental health experts agree that a balance of introverted and extroverted qualities is desirable.  Full social development means being able to enjoy time spent with others and time spent in quiet reflection.

C. INTELLECTUAL TRAITS  Mind & mental abilities: logic deduction, common sense, critical thinking skills, evaluating arguments, recognizing bias.  Imagination: Creative thinking  Intellectual traits are in continuous use… How can you improve your intellectual traits?  Education  Life-long learning  Experiences

Learning Experiences Any new situation can be a learning experience! What can a person learn from these particular experiences? experiences? 1.Buying a car. 2.Relationship break-up 3.Having a credit card. 4.Going to a play or an opera

BUILDING CHARACTER  GENEROSITY: A quality that counts Generosity means giving your time, talents and other resources without expecting something in return. Being generous is part of the “social” aspect of your personality. A teen known for generosity might:?????

Questions 1.Must a person have many resources to be generous? 2.Is generosity contagious? 3.Is generosity more or less admirable if the person receives public recognition for giving? 4.Journal: How have you shown generosity?
