THE SCHISM OF /11/10 World History

What is a schism?  Let’s ask an expert…  Jared Allen, defensive end, Minnesota Vikings

When asked if there was a schism between teammates, Allen responded  “I don’t think most guys on this team know what the word ‘schism’ means, let alone know how to use it in a sentence.”

Why was there a schism in the church?  Increasing disagreements between popes and emperors.  Popes considered themselves to be the boss of the Church.  Emperors considered themselves the boss of everyone, including the church.  They sometimes disagreed over religious issues, like the use of icons.

What are icons?  Icons are religious images used by some Christians in prayer or worship.  The emperor banned the use of icons.  The pope responded by supporting icons and banning the emperor from the church. (excommunication)

The Schism of 1054  Tensions continue to rise between Eastern and Western Christians.  Finally they split into two groups  Western- Catholic Church (pope)  Eastern- Eastern Orthodox Church (emperor and patriarch)

Comparing and Contrasting the 2 religions
