J/ Measurements in √s NN =200 GeV Au+Au Collisions Andrew Glenn University of Colorado for the PHENIX collaboration October 27, 2006 DNP 2006

October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 2 J/ Production (s)QGP Mixed phaseFreeze out Gluon Shadowing (Modification of PDF in nuclei) Nuclear Nuclear absorption by the spectators Cronin effect Color screening (Dissociation by gluons) Formation of J/  by cc coalescence Comover scattering Feed down from χ c and Ψ ’ J/  's are produced in hard scatterings at the early stages of collision, and interact with the collision medium, thus providing information about the properties of this medium.

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 3 R AA of J/ in Au+Au Constrained by d+Au Suppression increased toward the central collisions. Factor of 3 suppression at most central (Au+Au) Beyond the suppression from cold matter effect. |y|< <|y|<2.4 R AA R AA = d 3 N J/  AuAu /dp 3 d 3 N J  pp /dp 3 x

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 4 Grandchamp, Rapp, Brown hep-ph/ Capella, Sousa EPJ C30, 117 (2003 ) Capella, Ferreiro hep-ph/ comovers R AA and Suppression Models Co-mover (  abs = 1mb) Direct dissociation (+Comover) QGP screening (+Comover, feed down) J/ suppression at RHIC is over-predicted by the suppression models that described SPS data successfully.

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 5 Recombination Models Better matching with results compared to the suppression models. Don’t forget about free parameters. At RHIC (energy): Recombination compensates stronger suppression?

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 6 Invariant p T distributions J/   e+e- (Au+Au) 20-40% 40-93% p+p 0-20% 20-40% 40-93% J/    +  - (Au+Au) We of course have other observables

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 7 Theory (Model) Example Inspired by [1] which used coherent scattering to describe SPS suppression (but gave no p T information), we [2] implemented a Monte Carlo model of incoherent scattering similar to calculations in [3] to study the effects on p T. Glauber model → binary collision geometry PYTHIA → cc kinematics. Random kicks in the transverse plane are given from a distribution with a width set by the parameter. –kicks before cc production change the pair p T but not the q 2. –kicks after cc production change the pair p T and the q 2. The survival probability is given by F(q 2 ) [1] J. Qiu, J. P. Vary and X. Zhang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, (2002). [2] A.M. Glenn, Denes Molnar, J.L. Nagle nucl-th/ [3] H. Fujii, Phys. Rev. C 67, (2003). q2q2 F q0q0 Simple example No pair with q>q0 can form a J/ Ψ

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 8 Results for RHIC Suppression due to multiple scattering in cold nuclear matter A.M. Glenn, Denes Molnar, J.L. Nagle nucl-th/

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 9 Connected Observables Matching the suppression from data would imply an increase in of ~ 10 (GeV/c) 2 from p+p to mid-central Au+Au The increase is still too large if initial collisions (which do not change suppression) are turned off. NB: We can find values which reproduce SPS suppression or, but not both simultaneously.

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 10 Rapidity dependence p+p 40-93% 20-40% 0-20% AuAu PHENIX Preliminary nucl-th/ nucl-th/ Recombination models have implications for rapidity Errors still too large, theory still under-developed

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 11 Will provide much better reference Final results for Au+Au and p+p (i.e. publications) should be ready soon Outlook Analysis of Run5 p+p nearly complete ~1.5K J/  →e + e - ~8k J/  → μ + μ - ~Ten times the statistics of current Reference data

DNP 2006 October 27, 2006 Andrew Glenn 12Summary Factor of 3 suppression in most central Au+Au collisions Beyond the suppression from cold matter effects. Over-predicted by the suppression models effective for SPS. Recombination seems promising. Reference statistics increased 10x and final results with smaller error bars coming soon.
