God Sends the Judges: Ehud & Shamgar

Introduction Our journey through the judges brings us next to Deborah. After the death of Ehud, the children of Israel returned to doing that which was evil. Because of their wickedness, the Lord delivered Israel into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. (Judg 4:1-3)

The Story of Deborah A.After the death of Ehud, the Israelites returned to doing evil. (Judg 4:1-3) During this time, Deborah, a prophetess, was judging Israel. Deborah reminded Barak of the Lord's command for Barak to battle Jabin and his army. (Judg 4:4-10)

The Story of Deborah Sisera gathered all his chariots to go up against Barak. (Judg 4:11-16) After his army was defeated, Sisera fled to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite. After Sisera went to sleep, Jael killed him with a tent stake. (Judg 4:17-22)

The Story of Deborah Deborah and Barak sang a song praising the Lord. (Judg 5:1-30) The Israelites had forty years of rest. (Judg 5:31)

Lessons Learned One person can defeat sin and wickedness.  Consider Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite.(Judges 4:17-24)

Lessons Learned One person can defeat sin and wickedness.  A single Christian can stand.  Fight the good fight. (1 Tim 6:11- 12)  Stand fast in the faith. (1 Cor 16:13)  Stand fast in the liberty. (Gal 5:1)  Put on armor of God. (Eph 6:10-11)

Lessons Learned One who loves the Lord will shine before the world.  In Deborah's song, she wrote, “Thus let all Your enemies perish, O Lord! But let those who love him be like the sun when it comes out in full strength...” (Judges 5:31)

Lessons Learned One who loves the Lord will shine before the world.  Christians, those who love the Lord, will likewise shine “like the sun when it comes out in full strength.”  Children of light. (Eph 5:6-11)  Sons of light. (1 Thess 5:4-5)  Shine as lights to the world. (Phil 2:14-16)

Conclusion. Do not be a “Barak.” Be a “Deborah.” Let us have the strength to stand alone. Let us shine as the sun “when it comes out in full strength.”
