Louis Sachar was born on March 20, 1954 in East Meadow, New York. He stayed there until third grade when he was nine he moved to Tustin, California. His father, Robert, was a salesman on the 78th floor of the Empire State Building. His mom, Ruth, was a real estate agent. He enjoyed school and was a good student, but it wasn't until High School that he really became an avid reader. Sachar went to college in Ohio, at Antioch College, but had to leave because his father died. He went to the University of California for economics and then he went to Law school. During his time in California, he was a teachers aid at a local school. He currently lives in Austin, Texas. He is married, has a daughter and a dog. He likes to write for two hours every morning. He never discusses a book until he has completed it. His book, Holes, won a Newberry Award.

Stanley was walking home from school and Zero threw a pair of shoes over the side of the bridge. The shoes landed on Stanley's head. The police came and arrested Stanley because they thought he stole the shoes. He had a choice to go to Camp Green Lake or jail. He chose to go to Camp Green Lake. Everyone at camp is mean to Zero because he can’t read. Stanley offers to help Zero learn to read, if Zero digs an hour each day in Stanley's hole. This is working fine until Zero gets mad at Mr. Pendancekies and hits him with a shovel. Then, Zero runs away. Stanley goes and finds him. The problem in this story is that Zero is homeless. He is always getting into trouble. He draws Stanley into his trouble and they end up at a juvenile detention center. The solution is while they are digging they find this loot that gives them friendship and forchon

The setting takes place in Texas at CAMP GREEN LAKE point of view first person.
