Kate Keller- Helen’s mother. She is a young, strong, and confident woman who will endure anything for her child. Captain Arthur Keller- Helen’s father. He wants the best for his family, but can be overbearing and stubborn. He is a former Confederate captain in the Civil War, but often degrades women. James Keller- Captain Keller’s adult son from a previous marriage. He is a man with a dry sense of humor and wants his fathers approval.

Helen Keller- became ill at about 1.5 years old, which caused her to be blind and deaf, but eager to learn. She does not understand that things have names and that actions have consequences. Viney- A nurturing and caring servant to the Keller’s; has two children named Martha and Percy. Martha and Percy- Viney’s two young children Aunt Ev- Captain Keller’s older sister who wants the best for Helen; speaks freely and is not afraid to express her opinions.

Annie Sullivan- 20 years old. She is a strong, confident woman who speaks freely about her opinions. Sent to Helen’s home to teach and care for Helen. Anagnos- Annie Sullivan’s former teacher. He is a loving character, but can be firm as well. Jimmie- Annie Sullivan’s brother who passed away. His voice is heard in flashbacks.

-Most of the action takes place in or around the Keller home in Tuscumbia, Alabama. -The story takes place in the 1880’s. -Some events may have happened a little closer together in the play than they did in real life with Gibson had to shorten it to fit the length of a play.

Genre Drama Involves conflict and is designed to be acted by players on a stage before an audience. Physical play: Helen “communicates” through action True story based on the actual events in the lives of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan.
