I LEAD U …addresses the need to expand librarians leadership abilities to use participatory technology to effectively engage their libraries constituents.

Synergy Model Participants & Mentors. Competitive application: 5 members representing different types of libraries in a geographic area. 8 Project Teams per Cohort; 2 Cohorts. 2 Mentors per Cohort Group. Groups come together for three-training sessions to learn, select and implement a Web 2.0 project.

Instructor Corps Cohesive, complete curriculum. Instructors responsible for developing curriculum, focusing on: Strategic leadership Community needs assessment skills Privacy and security issues Meaningful applications of technological solutions R. Facilitator Participate in both Cohort cycles. Ensure all ILEADers participate in group discussions. Keep Cohort activities on time. Liaison with Mentors, Steering Committee and ISL staff. Jan Ison, Executive Director, Lincoln Trails Libraries System, Facilitator.

Mentors 2 Mentors per project team. Keep participants motivated. Provide guidance and advice through entire Cohort cycle.

Project Teams Regional or statewide in nature. Teams should be informed of needs of their user community. Consist of staff of members from at least three different organizations, including regional library systems. MLS not required.

Cohort Cycle Session 1: Keynote and review of participatory technology tools that address community needs. Intersession: Explore existing tools that can achieve. Session 2: Presentation of product proposals Intersession: Completing design and implementing a mock-up Session 3: Product presentation and sustainability. Post-Cohort: Implementation and evaluation.

Stipends $4,000 per Project Team. During Session 2, groups will apply for necessary equipment. Project team members will decide which library owns the equipment. The owning library will contribute a 10 percent match for the equipment. Thumb drives will be distributed to team members that contain instructor materials, rosters and contact information. No match required. Participants and Mentors are responsible for travel and incidentals; rooms & meals provided by grant funds.

The Sandbox ILEADers will use existing programs to learn basic techniques, and add to existing statewide library enterprises: Add images to Illinois Digital Archives Post video diaries and blog on WJIL Contribute oral interviews on the Illinois Veterans History Project.

WJIL Application forms for teams and mentors available online in the Fall 2009, application packet per team. Identify at least one need in community of users (example: meet community needs during economic crisis.) Identify a user representative within the team member’s community who will serve as advisor and provide feedback.

Evaluation Institute for Legal, Legislative and Policy Studies and the Survey Research Office at UIS. Focus on both implementation and outcomes of the training. Evaluation includes Project teams’ initiatives.
