Welcome Purpose: To build the confidence and self-esteem of our students To teach them the fundamentals of good public speaking To have fun

Judging DO Welcome them Deep breath, Congrats, Have Fun Take roll; read rules Read your judging ballots before beginning Where to sit Toward back, slightly off center Make a space for yourself Provide comments Write while they speak, more is better Scoring 1st (47-50) 2nd (45-48) 3rd (43-46) 4th rank can range (39-45) Keep time and record it DON’T Make up a 5 th place (more than one can be 4 th ) Provide verbal feedback in the room A Word about Providing Feedback Please be thoughtful Use the Speech Team +/EBI approach (It would be Even Better If you did _____) Provide one very specific comment

Timing Original Content A speech created by the student (time limits vary) Editorial Commentary – take a position ( min) Expository – inform the audience (6 ½ - 7 ½ min) Visual Aids if used, should be used Impromptu – think on your feet (1 – 5 min) Oratory – memorized, to persuade (6 ½ - 7 ½ min Senior; 5 min Junior, 30 second grace period) Interpretive Reading (Interp) A reading from a book, play or poetry (6 ½ - 7 min) Dramatic Humorous Duo Children’s Storybook
