Domestic Policy Poverty Scott, Kolby, Ty

Definition Poverty - The deprivation of common necessities that determine the quality of living, including food, clothing, shelter. You are labeled as being in poverty if you make an annual income of $18,850 or less.

Social Programs Medicaid created in 1965 was established to help care for low income citizens. Food Stamp Program created in 1964 was brought in to help needy families based on income level. Social Security was made to help give assistance low income elderly citizens. It has also become the largest social program today. Programs like these are known as a safety net and are meant to help bring people out of poverty.

Issues Poverty is an issue that is slowly growing upward It is estimated that three million people living in America are homeless Also that recent tax breaks are only seem to be benefiting the rich and making the gap between wealthy and poor bigger.

Issues Continued Another thing seems to be that the rate of poverty is increasing is because of the slow rate of economic growth. Poverty is also such a big part of the American society that it takes up about fifty percent of the federal budget every year.

Impact Because of the rising rate of poverty things like The New Deal were formed to help decrease the rate of poverty Medicaid, Social Security, and Food Stamps have helped bring people out of poverty over the years. These solutions might not have helped everyone come out of poverty but it still has helped others.

Impact On Government Institutions Things like poverty take up half of the federal budget every year. The government also has pressure about citizens wanting them to fund faith-based charities. The government is viewed by some as hindering religious organizations that have set out to help the poor.

Impacts Continued Yet also at the same time the government has pressure about spending taxpayers money on religious views that they might not always agree with. One other view is that economic growth might be one of the most important things in reducing poverty.

Agree Or Disagree? I agree with them because they are something that the government has made to try and help push people out of poverty for what ever reason they are in that situation for. I also think that the programs like social security and Medicaid can help people even if they are considered poor because they were made to help them out of hard times and get people up and moving again.
