Welcome to C-8 Burncoat High School with Mr. Flynn August 2015 – June 2016 Algebra II – MA 1042 – Period 1

Welcome Students! Thank you for signing up for our Honors Algebra II class My name is Sean Flynn, I was a double major in Biology and Mathematics at Fairfield University and I have a Masters Degree in Secondary Education from Worcester State College I hope that we can give you an idea about what it is like to be a student in this class. If you would don’t like what you hear, please make an appointment with the guidance department

School Policies NO electronic devices and no exposed headphones/earbuds should be on any time during the school day – please don’t call or text your parents either! First time – group warning Second time – individual/group warning Third time – device confiscated; pick up in main office at the end of the school day No hooded sweatshirts are allowed in any classrooms at any time More than 14 unexcused absences in a class will mean “no credit” for the student Students are not allowed to eat outside of the cafeteria areas – you may only bring water or non-processed food to class; if it didn’t come from the earth – throw it away!

Class Policies NO large backpacks or pocketbooks in class – if our book can fit it in, put it away in a locker! Attendance is mandatory and is taken everyday. If you are tardy, Go get a late slip from the tardy station in the B caf. or house office. Six tardies is considered to be one absence. Missed class time can be made up after school in 20 min increments. Grading – Exams are 40%, Quizzes, Problem Sets, and Projects are 30%, Homework 18%, and Classwork and Participations 12%. Homework is typically assigned daily and sometimes weekly; all homework is passed in by the student at the start of the next class. Homework and grades are posted on line at

A day in C-8… We start by reading our agenda – on the white board in the front right of the room. This tells us the warm-up assignment, objective of the lesson, student helpers, and homework practice. NOW – yes that means now…and unless stated, do in your notebook SWBAT – your objective for the day TK – time keeper: responsible for signing the lav pass and yelling out the 5 min warning at the end of class TA – teaching assistant: responsible for passing out stuff, collecting stuff, and filling in for missing TK PRACTICE – everyone needs practice to get better ; ) – and yes it means later not now…

A day in C-8… We then pass in our homework, complete the NOW work, actively participate in the lesson, try some practice problems together and then independently. As we work on learning, each student is reminded to… Be prepared, Be respectful, Be focused, Be honest. If you need to use the lav, don’t ask me; just find the pee board, fill it in, and ask the time keeper to sign it. If you need to escape my class for other reasons, fill out the “You’re leaving” book and ask me for a green hall pass.

What do I believe in? I believe in using modeling as way to understand abstract concepts in Algebra. I believe that students should have to explain their reasoning and demonstrate their ability to solve complex problems. I believe in making mathematics less stressful by using more humor and real world examples in our lessons I believe that if you believe you can succeed, then I will help you get there!
