1) Jesus answered the primal question of mankind: Where did we come from?

When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”... Matthew 19:1-6 (NIV)

..."Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,‘ and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." Matthew 19:1-6 (NIV)

2) His answer frames our core identity in the Father’s great activity: God is the Creator.

How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that this will not take place in winter, because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now - and never to be equaled again. Mark 13:17-19 (NIV)

"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' Matthew 19:4 (NIV)

Authority and Dominion

...and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? Matthew 19:5 (NIV)

Determiner of purpose

So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." Matthew 19:6 (NIV)

Eternal Caretaker

"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?... Matthew 6:28-34 (NIV)

...So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:28-34 (NIV)
