EARTH FORCES VOLCANOES Volcanoes and Supervolcanoes

SUCCESS CRITERIA By the end of this section you should be able to: Describe the three types of volcano – active, dormant and extinct. Give 2 benefits of living in a volcanic area. Understand the key terms to help describe an earthquake. Explain how earthquakes are measured and recorded.

TYPES OF VOLCANOES Active – A volcano that could erupt at any time. Dormant – A volcano that has not erupted for a long time, 100 years or more. Extinct – A volcano that can’t erupt again.

ANNOTATED DIAGRAM OF A VOLCANO

Volcanoes release poisonous gases, clouds of dust, ash and lava bombs. The lava can reach temperatures of over 100°C and will destroy everything in its path. Lava bombs vary in size from small particles up to the size of cars! These bombs can flatten houses and start fires. A lava bomb

Volcanic eruptions can also spark other hazards such as mud flows, landslides, earthquakes, ash-fall, acid rain and tsunamis.

MAKE THE LINKS You must identify the links between all of the words on the board. RULE 1: INCLUDE ALL WORDS RULE 2: THE ONLY WORD YOU CAN USE MORE THAN ONCE IS VOLCANOES TASK: Create a piece of writing about VOLCANOES YOU MAY INCLUDE PICTURES AND DIAGRAMS

LEARNING RECAP ◦Describe the three types of volcano – active, dormant and extinct. ◦Give 2 benefits of living in a volcanic area. ◦Understand the key terms to help describe an earthquake. ◦Explain how earthquakes are measured and recorded.

INTRODUCTION TO YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK SUPERVOLCANO

Hot Springs and Mud pots

Yellowstone has erupted 3 times in ancient history million years ago 1.3 million years ago and 640 thousand years ago

This cycle suggests that another super eruption could be brewing!!

If Yellowstone erupted.... It would be 10, 000 times the size of the Pompeii eruption!

BBC NEWS UPDATE ERUPTION AT YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, USA TASK: Complete Newspaper Article See booklet for details

* This will be part of your assessment for Geography. * Describe and explain your chosen topic – Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Tsunami or Supervolcano. * You will have to write a short essay on the effects it had on the people and the landscape You will have 1 period in class and some of next period but then will need to be completed at home.

1.Introduction 2.Some information/facts about your chosen Earth Force 3.Case Study – You may wish to speak about the ones we looked at in class/research your own 4.Impact your chosen Earth Force had on the people and the landscape 5.Conclusion

YOUR NEXT TOPIC IS: CHINA
