 Do you recognize it?  Do you know its dictionary definition(s)?  Do you know the connotation(s) for the word?  Do you know its collocations?  Do you know its grammar placement and form?  Do you know how to pronounce it?  Do you know its register in situations?

 The study of word meaning  Words organized into networks and sets  Synonyms and Antonyms  Word formation (affixation, compounding)

 Use a graphic organizer or pictograph to explain new words.  Limit the number of new words taught.  Ask students to use words in sentences or situations  Use clear examples of how to use the word  Limit the use of translation dictionaries  Teach how to look at a word in the dictionary  Teach the spelling of new words.  Teach ways to remember words.  Guess meaning based on context clues, grammatical category, structure of the word
