Measurement Finding circumference, weight and height of pumpkins.

How are measurements of a circle related to one another? We know how to find the perimeter of figures with straight lines, but a circle does not have straight sides. So, you need to use a different method to find the CIRCUMFERENCE of a circle. For any circle, circumference is always about 3.14 times the diameter. Diameter

The formula for circumference Because the circumference is always the same value (3.14), ancient mathematicians gave it a special name, pi (pronounced like pie). Circumference = Pi (3.14) x Diameter » If the diameter of a circle is 6 cm across a circle. How would I find the circumference? 3.14 x 6 = cm » To find the circumference of a circle using the radius (remember a radius is half the diameter) if the radius is 3 (half of 6) 3.14 x 3 x 2 = 18.84

Weight Remember weight is how heavy an object is? – What type of tools would I use to measure weight? Common Customary units of weight: » Ounces (smallest) » Pounds (lbs) 1lb = 16 ounces » Tons (T) 1 ton = 2,000 lb Common Metric units of weight: » Milligrams (smallest » Grams 1 gram (g) = 1,000 milligram » Kilogram 1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams

Length Remember length is how tall or long an object might be. Later we will find the height (length) of a pumpkin. – Common Customary Units of Length: » Inches (12 in = 1 Foot) » Feet (3 ft. = 1 yd.) » Yards (1,760 yds. = 1 mile) » Miles (5,280 feet or 1,760 yds.) – Common Metric Units of Length: » Millimeter (1, 000 mm. = 1 meter) » Centimeters (100 cm. = 1 meter) » Decimeters (10 dm= 1 meter) » Meters » Kilometer (1,000 meters = 1 km) – Can you think of any objects we use every day which measure any of these lengths?

Review of circumference, height and weight. When would I measure the circumference of an object? » Circle What is the formula for circumference? » Circumference = Pi (3.14) x diameter How would I measure the height or length of an object? What is weight?
