Welcome to Room 24 Social Studies Mr. Nightingale

My Bio  Family I live in Aurora with my wife Jenna and son Louie  Education Wellsville High School Kent State University Undergraduate (1-8) Ashland University Graduate (C & I)  Teaching Experience 1 year at Maple Heights 13th year at West G  Hobbies Coaching, Boating, Working Out, Golf, MMA, Steelers Fan

Classroom Rules  The Three R’s  Respectful Others, self and school  Responsible For their learning  Ready to Learn Prompt and prepared

Classroom Expectations  1. In your seat by the time the bell rings. Pencils sharpened (pens encouraged) Materials out  2. Bring all materials to class everyday! Do not ask what you will need, bring it all.  3. Stay in class during instructional time.

Assignments  All students must write assignments in planners  Due the next day unless stated otherwise  Makeup work is responsibility of the student  11/2 day per day absent to make up missing work

The Planner  This is one of the most imperative pieces to your student’s success at the middle school  I will sign each student’s planner everyday

Progress Book  I will post grades with in 48 hrs of collecting an assessment  Students and parents are encouraged to check Progressbook at least once per week

Holt Textbooks and E-books (on-line)  Geography  South and East Asia and the Pacific  Southwest and Central Asia

Curriculum  Map Skills- and cartography  Economics- Hershey’s chocolate economics  Ancient India  Ancient China  Ancient Egypt  World Religions  Junior Scholastic Magazine (semi-monthly)  SLO (student learning objectives)

Unit Progression  Read the Chapters (various ways)  Note taking (Cornell system) from power point  Formative assessment packet Vocab, map skills, primary resource documents, historical literature review, study guides, Jeopardy reviews  Formal Assessments Projects, Homework, Quizzes, Tests, Junior Scholastic

Extra-Credit  1.) Buy extra-credit with Reward Store Stars  2.) Current Events Students can complete up to three current event summaries per quarter Summaries must follow the format of the rubric (on website) Each summary is worth up to 5 extra-credit points (15pts per quarter)
