2 Provides mechanism for tying vehicle information to the motor carrier responsible for safety. This linkage between the carrier and vehicle enables State and Federal Governments to: 1) Identify the motor carriers responsible for the safety of the vehicles 2) Monitor the safety performance at both the carrier and vehicle level. 3 ABC Motor Carrier registers its three trucks and does not lease any of its trucks. 5 Big Truck Lease is renewing its registration. The motor carrier responsible for safety, XYZ Motor Carrier, is expected to change in 4 months. The Y indicator is recorded to indicate the carrier is expected to change. 6 Default Motor Carrier Vehicle registrant becomes a “default motor carrier” responsible for safety when: - Responsible carrier is expected to change in 29 days or less - Responsible carrier not known at time of registration Note: The USDOT number at the vehicle level (motor carrier responsible for safety) must be a “motor carrier” number and cannot be a “registrant only” number.
7 Big Truck Lease registers its three trucks. Truck 1 is long-term leased to ABC Motor Carrier. Truck 2 is long-term leased to XYZ Motor Carrier. Truck 3 is continually trip leased to various customers.
