NODC Geoportal Server Yuanjie Li & Jefferson Ogata

NODC’s Geoportal Server configuration: data access links, time period search, location search, keyword browse, and ocean basemap Results from Geoportal Server usability test Future implementation plan Overview

Data access links Search by time period NODC’s ocean locator Browse by keyword NODC’s ocean basemap Summary Geoportal Configuration

Goal: to provide user with links to all data access methods and services Procedure: define an abstract name for the URL, identify XPath expression to locate URL within the metadata record, verify full CSW access, update Geoportal CSW response XSLT Online instructions: _Search_Result Data Access Links

Goal: allow selection of data by date of observation Procedure: add start-date and end-date indexes, add Javascript on the search page to construct a Lucene expression to perform the search against these indexes, and combine this with the query string from the search inputs Online documentation is under preparation Time Period Search

Goal: allow selection of data by observation location Procedure: add all the required location maps, create address locator, publish the address locator to ArcGIS server using Geocode Service, update the web interface, and add this service to Geoportal Server’s gpt.xml Online documentation is under preparation Search by Location

Goal: allow browsing using NODC controlled vocabularies Procedure: define an abstract name for the keyword categories, identify XPath expression within the metadata record, make Lucene index column for each keyword category, construct browse catalog document based on possible values for each keyword category The newer table-of-contents code from version 1.2 allows use of identical labels in multiple locations in the TOC, essential where the same keyword text might occur in multiple axes Online instructions is under preparation Browse by Keyword

NODC’s Ocean Basemap Goal: to have an ocean-oriented map view with all the NODC sea names and related ocean features Procedure: compose sea name/sea feature layers in an ArcGIS geodatabase using ArcMap, publish the database to ArcGIS server using Map service, generate tiles for the base map at different scales, update gpt.xml Online linkage:

Geoportal Server Usability Test Results The total participants: 31 (18 are ocean data users) Primary use—scientific research (>60%) Testers were from different countries around the world

Future implementation plan Make the map locator easier to use: improve the map layout; make the locator work with automatic zoom Improve the free text search: configure the search default syntax; add ontology service to Geoportal Server Make the web interface more clear Add data visualization options Configure Geoportal for ISO metadata
