Since there are so many animals they are put into different groups according to similar characteristics

Vertebrates Animals with a backbone or spinal column Invertebrates Animals without a backbone or spinal column All of the groups we are looking at today are vertebrates except insects.insects

 Cold-Blooded  Live both on land and in water  Skin is moist  Found in the tropics  They are vertebrates  Most live in or near water or damp places

 Breathe through gills  Most lay eggs (although sharks give birth to live young)  Most are cold blooded  Covered with scales  Live in water

 The most intelligent animals  They have fur or hair  Have four limbs  Warm-Blooded  Breathe air through lungs

 There are thousands of different kinds of birds  Have feathers  Have a beak or a bill  Lay eggs  Warm- Blooded

 Have six legs when fully grown  The body of an insect has three parts › Head › Thorax › Abdomen  They have their skeletons on the outside of their body  Have small openings in their bodies to breathe  Most go through metamorphosis metamorphosis

 Have dry, scaly skin  Cold-Blooded  Most lay eggs  Young look like their parents
