APAN P2P WG Meeting Hyun-chul Kim KAIST (Thu)

Agenda Chair : Hyun-chul Kim Roll Call WG Review “P2P and Grid : Convergence and Challenges” Session Report Comments on the Workshop The next 2 years Possible Topics for Discussion Any Other Business Next Meeting

APAN P2P Working Group Objectives APAN P2P Working Group is focused on the followings. - help in understanding implications and challenges of emerging P2P technologies and applications on research and education communities - explore, experiment and take advantage of P2P technologies to support advanced applications on research/education networks. (Needs to be revised and elaborated more)

Activities n n Bi-annual Joint Sessions/Workshops and WG Meetings during APAN Meetings. (potentially with Network Storage & Content Distribution WG or Grid WG) - P2P Session in APAN Penang Meetings (2001 Aug.) - P2P Session in APAN Phuket Meetings (2002 Jan.) - P2P&NSCD Session in APAN Shanghai Meetings (2002 Aug.) - P2P&NSCD Session in APAN Fukuoka Meetings (2003 Jan.) - P2P Session in APAN Busan Meetings (2003 Aug.) - P2P&Grid Session in APAN&Internet2 Joint Techs Workshop (2004 Jan.) n n What would be the Next?

Topics We have had in the past sessions - P2P Overview : Model, technologies, and applications - Measurement of P2P traffic and Peers’ Resources on a campus network - Scalable Network Resource (Storage) Sharing - Some P2P projects : P3, … - Jxta and P2P - P2P and Grid : Convergence and Challenges - What are the Next?

P2P and Grid Workshop Report Internet2 P2P WG activities (LionShare,...), Linda Roos/OARnet APAN P2P WG Introduction, Hyun-chul Kim/KAIST Connor Park/KISTI Personal Power Plant (P3), Kazuyuki Shudo/AIST On Death, Taxes and the Convergence of Peer-to-Peer and Grid Computing, Adriana Iamnitchi, University of Chicago Logistical Networking: Provisioning Shared Resources, Micah Beck/UTK Introduction to Grid Activities in the Asia Pacific Region, Yoshio Tanaka/AIST Public and Grid Computing, David P. Anderson/UC Berkeley P2P - Simulation and Reality, Sam Joseph/University of Hawaii Jxta and Grid, Simon See/SUN & NTU

Comments on the workshop n n 10 speeches(!!!) for 3 hours, in 2 Sessions u u Too tight schedule. 20 minutes for each speech, in 3 sessions would have been much better. u u Apologies for the last speakers…. T_T n n Grid people have been collaborating with each other so often, in a well-organized way than P2P people do. n n P2P people need to PEER with each other first (as well as with application and Grid people), share their ideas, experiences and best practices obtained from what they have been doing. u u To dig out new (killer) applications on a high-bandwidth network infra(v4/v6). u u To learn from each other, particularly on technologies and application/middleware system design issues and decisions. u u Discuss with various other groups F F Internet2 P2P WG, IRTF P2P RG, Grid groups, eScience groups, IPv6, … n n Any other comments?

The Next 2 Years - Currently serving a role as a loosely-connected forum that bridges p2p people in APAN countries. - Make and strengthen peering relationships with people first! and from there we expect to make a step forward to define and have some interesting cooperative projects. At least, we can help or support each other’s work/projects in various ways. - - That also would be kinda cooperation/collaboration, at minimum level. - Let’s start from connecting P2P people/projects in AP countries NeuroGrid : University of Tokyo (move to University of Hawaii) Personal Power Plant (P3), Karaoke Grid : AIST : KISTI P2P-based Web caching and FTP caching : KAIST (thanks to Waseda Univ. and NTU) : UC Berkeley LionShare : Penn State and Internet2 Internetworking p2p systems : WIDE P2P(IDEON) WG P2P traffic cache : NTT Laboratories Personal Lightweight Grid System : KAIST And Grid People - In Aug 2004 : a 90 minutes’ single session on a few of above projects. - In Jan 2005 : An half/or one day’s Workshop on real P2P systems and experiences.

Possible Topics for Discussion (if any) n n (Any interesting) Candidate Topics/Projects to be presented at the Next P2P Session? u u Any volunteers or recommendation? n n Have you got any items/ideas that you want to propose as a candidate (WG-level) project ? n n Do you need anyone else’s help in doing your own projects or papers in some ways? n n What else?

Others n n Welcome, New members! u u Two active researchers joined us! Dr. Kazuyuki Shudo (P3 project leader) and Dr. Sam Joseph (NeuroGrid project leader) n n Looking for a volunteer or a nomination, to shift to a Co-chair system, if any. n n Next Meeting u u At Cairn, Australia, during APAN Meetings n n Any Other Business?
