Biography of Joseph Pulitzer by: Jake Reisner

Why did Joseph Pulitzer leave Hungary? He wanted to be in the military. He was rejected by the Austrian Army and the French Foreign Legion. He moved to Boston, MA to enlist in the Union Army

When did he immigrate to the U.S. and how did he get there? In 1864, he immigrated to Boston. He traveled by ship.

what was his life like before he left for the U.S.? Joseph came from a wealthy family in Hungary. His father died. He was weak lunged and had faulty vision so he was unable to have an army career in Europe.

What were some challenges he faced? He was a laborer (a poorly paying job). He was in the union Army for one year.

How did he overcome the challenges he faced? He overcame his challenges by becoming a U.S. citizen and becoming a St. Louis reporter.

How did Pulitzer contribute to our culture? He was one of the greatest American newspaper publishers in history. when he died he left $2 million to Columbia university and established the Pulitzer Prize.
