 Ran for leadership of the Liberal Party multiple times  First election as leader of the Liberals was the 1993 election  Main election promise was to cut government spending  1998 was first surplus Canada had had in 25 years  Next issue was Quebec Separatism

 Won both elections with a majority government  Government cuts had effected some areas so money was put back into those areas during these terms  Nunavut became an official territory  Created new underage criminal laws  American relations became important in his last term

 Chretien’s decision about the Iraq war was popular with most Canadians but not with his party  Stepped down December 12, 2003  Paul Martin stepped in
