Coaching Process Model

Discover Your Passion 1. What would you like to see solved or improved upon? 2. What do you do when you have free time? 3. What pulls your attention in a book store? 4. What do you find interesting on the Internet? 5. If you had to watch a documentary, which genre would you choose? 6. What games have you enjoyed playing? 7. What is something you believe that almost nobody agrees with you on? 8. What conversations do you choose to be involved in? 9. When do you feel alive?

Re-discovering Your Passion  If you feel something is off kilter, it might be time to make a change.  It’s never too late to make a course correction.  Choosing your own path is difficult – and exciting.  Give yourself the right of self- determination.

Managing Transitions Before you can begin something new, you have to end what used to be. Before you can learn a new way of doing things, you have to unlearn the old way. Before you can become a different kind of person, you must let go of your old identity. So beginnings depend on endings. The problem is, people don’t like endings. William Bridges

Middle Phase of the Transition Process - the Neutral Zone A place that is nowhere between two somewheres Like the wilderness through which Moses led his people The interval between the decay of the old and the formation and establishment of the new A time when reorientation and redefinition must take place Innovation can take place Opportunity for new answers to old problems

New Beginnings  Beginnings are a psychological phenomena  The “start” of something new may not be a beginning  To make a new beginning, people need: Purpose A Picture The Plan A Part to Play

Importance of Communication in Transitions  Develop a shared vision and then communicate it often  Seek input and ideas on WIIFM  Mutually agree on actions to be taken  Follow up to insure that agreed upon action has been taken  Recognize any achievement when it occurs  Celebrate new beginnings

Factors Affecting Communication  Poor listening habits  Differing backgrounds  Gender differences  Improper time and location  Improper method for delivering message  Stress and preconceived ideas  Distractions  Biases and/or prejudices

Supporting Each Other through Transitions If I were to summarize in one sentence the single most important principle I have learned in the field of interpersonal relations, it would be this: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. This principle is the key to effective interpersonal communication. Stephen R. Covey

Action Plan for PHNAC  What steps are you willing to put in place to help PHNAC continue its role as advocate and the voice of public health nurses?

Thank you! Roz Bedell
