On December 4, 1872 between Azores and Portugal the Dei Gratia saw the Mary Celeste abandoned.
Benjamin Briggs, a 37 year old, was the last person to own the Mary Celeste.
The Mary Celeste set sail on November 7, 1872 from New York.
Nobody knows exactly what happened, but they do have theories.
The crew believed that the ship was sinking and they left in panic.
Pirates kidnapped the crew and their captain.
Waterspouts formed and caused the crew to abandon the ship.
Some people think that wine barrels caused fuses and the people left in panic thinking that there were going to be flames.
