SPRING 2015 Mrs. Hardison’s Outline, Rules, and Other Necessities

RESPONSIBILITIES AND RULES  Listen to me and your classmates when speaking  Participate in class as this is a graded requirement  Attend class and come on time  Respect me and your classmates; everyone must feel secure and welcomed  Clean up your own mess. I will not pick up trash and will not tolerate a mess  Be Prepared for class with paper, pencils, pens etc.  IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE, PULL ME TO THE SIDE TO TALK ABOUT IT! Do not handle conflict in front of everyone.  CONSEQUENCES- Warning, Student-Teacher Conference, Parent Contact, Referral. Immediate ISS if behavior is severe!

CLASS STRUCTURE  Grammar and Journals need to be kept up with in a notebook. I will check these once a month for a quiz grade Grammar quizzes are on Friday’s  Vocabulary and Literary Terms need to kept up with for your use and will be checked weekly Quizzes are on Friday’s for both  Current Events are due on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s and they are a grade. You need to also keep up with these.  Any mini-projects are quiz grades.  Reading aloud or independently will be based upon you.

GRADING PROCEDURE-HONORS  Class Work/Participation- 5 Percent- Will be graded Weekly You must earn your points! You can get up to 50 points a week. 2 for twitter wall, 10 for current events, 5 for grammar, and 5 for sharing a journal  Projects- 30 Percent  Quizzes- 15 Percent When homework is assigned, it will be a quiz grade  Supplemental Reading- 5 Percent  Tests- 45 Percent

TARDINESS AND ABSENCES  You are responsible for your own actions! If you miss something, ask a classmate during an appropriate time what you missed and if you need anything from me. If you get only one tardy per nine weeks, I will drop your lowest quiz grade! If you only miss one day per nine weeks I will also add five points to your lowest test grade!  If you miss class on a day that an assignment is due I will take off five points per day no matter what. If you know that you will miss that day, turn it in early. If it is random, it to me. Only under severe circumstances will I accept late work with no penalty and you must me to let me know what is going on. If you are here and do not turn in your work on time, I will take off ten points. After five days, you will not make higher than a 50.

PRESENTATIONS  I love presentations and you should learn to love them too! We will be doing plenty of them now and it will help prepare you for future jobs or colleges.  Things that are important for presentations EYE CONTACT-Do not look at your work the entire time. Scan the room while presenting. TONE AND VOLUME- Sound enthusiastic and speak so that everyone can hear you. KNOWLEDGE- Please do not present something that you have not practiced, researched, and reviewed. I can tell if you have no clue as to what you are talking about!  I will take off points for lacking in these areas!

ENGLISH III-S OUTLINE  January 22nd- 30th: Reviewing grammar, writing and the overall concept of American Literature.  February 2nd- 20th: Encounters and Foundations-1800’s. Time line activity, Social Milestones, individual PowerPoints for American Literature/History, The Coyote Finishes his Work, Native American Stories with essay, The Life of Olaudan Equiano, The Declaration of Independence. Women’s Rights Convention, Writing Workshop, Presenting and Evaluating Writing, quiz (page 130).  February 23rd- March 6th: American Romanticism Reading includes: timeline, milestones, The Devil and Tom Walker, Nature, Resistance to Civil Government, The Pit and the Pendulum, To Helen, Helen, Because I could not Stop for Death, quiz.  March 9th- 17th: The Rise of Realism page 378. Reading includes: timeline, milestones, Frederick Douglas (p. 398), Slave Girl, Gettysburg Address of 1863, quiz (page ).

 March 18 th -April 3 rd : The Moderns page 558. Reading includes: timeline, milestones, The Great Gatsby, Nothing Gold can Stay, The Harlem Renaissance (page742), Langston Hughes selections (pages ), quizzes (pages ). We are reading The Great Gatsby. Spring Break is 04/6-04/10.  April 13 th -May 1 st : Contemporary Literature 1936-Present. Reading includes: timelines, milestones, Night, Hiroshima, Black Boy, Quizzes (page ), The Other Wes Moore.  May 4 th -22nd: The Crucible  May 26th-29th: Exam Review: grammar, literary terms, vocabulary, practice test.

The Anglo Saxon Chronicle p. 83: test. Literary Map p. 91: test.  February 16th: WORKDAY  February 17th-18: 17th and 18th Centuries: Page 442. The Rape of the Lock page 540: quiz.  February 19th- March 13th: The Romantic Period: Page 652 Time line. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner p Test. To a Skylark p A Vindication of the Rights of Women p Frankenstein by Marry Shelly, a novel.

 March 16th-20th: The Victorian Era Page 852 Time line. My last Duchess p Jane Eyre p  March 23rd-May 1st: Modernism and Postmodernism 1901-Present. Page 1010 Time line. Page 1036 A Closer Look. Page 1046 The Hollow Men by George Orwell, a novel is very analytical and will take time to read.  May 4th-15th: Continuation of Modernism and Postmodernism Present. Page “No Witchcraft for Sale.” Page 1212, “We’ll Never Conquer Space” with essay and questions.

 May 18th-May 26th: You must choose two selections to read and present to the class. They must be from and they must be regarding British Literature. This will count for two test grades. You will define any vocabulary you do not know or think that your peers will not know as well as tell me what literary terms apply to the text. You will create a PowerPoint in order to present this to the class. The PowerPoint must have at least 10 slides and your presentation skills (eye contact, volume, enthusiasm) will matter! This means you need to do research to find material by British Authors. GO TO THE LIBRARY OR USE THE INTERNET. I will be checking your final topics on April 24 th.  May 27th-29th: Exam Review. Grammar, SAT Words, Literary Terms.  June 1st-10th Tentative Exams

SUPPLEMENTAL READING  For this class, you are required to read one book per nine weeks. So that you will have equal time, the first book talk is due by March 13 th and the second is due by May 1 st.  You cannot read a magazine or any book that you have already read or watched the movie to. USE THE LIBRARY AS YOUR RESOURCE! Choose whatever you are interested in as long as it is appropriate to discuss with me. You have to schedule the book talk on the calendar. If you miss it, you must reschedule. I am available during first period, warrior focus if time permits, and Tuesday through Thursday after school as long as nothing comes up.  I suggest you go to the library as soon as the semester begins as to not get behind!
