Mandatory Health Blocks (CORE)   Must be completed in the assigned slot in your timetable with your assigned teacher.   Blocks are: Fitness Management Social/Mental Impact of Sport Substance Use and Abuse   Assessment is Complete/Incomplete   Physical Education Attendance Policy in effect!! No more than one absence per block.

Activity Blocks   We strongly encourage you to complete these activity blocks in the assigned slot in your timetable.   You may choose between the two activities offered in class.   Sign-up immediately to reserve a spot.   Assessment is again Complete/Incomplete.   Physical Education Attendance Policy in effect!! No more than one absence per block.

Activity Block Questions?   Can I complete blocks that I did in grade 10/11???   Can I complete outside blocks because the ones offered in class do not interest me???   Can I complete blocks in Semester 2?   Can I use physical activity time outside of class as a block? YES YES, BUT… NO YES, BUT…

Physical Activity Practicum   A minimum of 30 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity. Averages to 1.5 hours or so/week.   All 30 hours MUST be completed by the end of the semester and MUST be evenly distributed throughout the semester.   All physical activity must be logged and verified.

What activities can you do?   Any activity that is performed in school BUT not in class. For example: fitness centre, intramurals, or school team.   Any activity that is performed in the community with a team or organization. For example: dance, hockey, soccer, gymnastics, etc…   Any activity that is performed on your own in the community. For example: downhill skiing, jogging, pick-up basketball, etc… ALMOST EVERYTHING QUALIFIES AS LONG AS IT IS PERFORMED AT A MODERATE TO VIGOROUS INTENSITY!!

Moderate to Vigorous   Moderate to Vigorous intensity has been defined quantitatively as 4.5 METS.   A MET is a measurement of the energy demands of exercise.   Examples include lacrosse (8 METS) and bowling (3 METS).   A complete list of activities with their MET value has been linked to the VMC Physical Education Website. Record all physical activity BUT you only get to count the hours which have a MET value of 4.5 or more!

Risk Management   Students must complete all of the following forms prior to beginning their Physical Activity Practicum: 1) Parent Declaration and Consent & Student Declaration Form (same form) 2) Personal Physical Activity Plan 3) Print off activity specific “Physical Activity Safety Checklist”. ALL FORMS CAN BE FOUND LINKED ON THE VMC PHYSICAL EDUCATION WEBPAGE
