LECOM is one of 140 out of 500 Colleges to receive distinguished service recognition on the first President’s Community Service Honor Roll.

The Community is our Campus LECOM Earns Distinguished Service Recognition From President's Honor Roll For Community Service “LECOM has set a strong example for college-level civic engagement. Many people and communities have been improved because LECOM and its students identified some of society’s most pressing needs and got involved.” Stephen Goldsmith Chief Executive Officer Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that works to foster a culture of volunteering and service in America.

LECOM prepares students to actively serve and become a positive force for change in their communities. The College encourages students to become involved in community service projects within LECOM and throughout Erie, Pennsylvania and Bradenton, Florida. Many opportunities become available for student outreach into the community and LECOM students continually are demonstrating that "The Community is Our Campus." Nearly 40 student clubs and academic societies provide thousands of volunteer hours to local organizations. Throughout the academic year, students are raising funds or collecting goods to make life better for their neighbors, not only in Erie and Bradenton, but around the country and across the globe. Bridging the Gaps Brings Health Care to Many in Erie Bridging the Gaps places health professional students at various community sites in order to provide service to underserved populations while training community responsive health and social service professionals. The students provided approximately 4500 hours of community service at Erie community sites.

The Mentoring Club works in conjunction with the YMCA of Erie which manages a Reading Center and recreational facilities at Erie Heights which are open from 1 to 9 PM daily. The Mentoring Club presently staffs the Reading Center 5 days a week, 3 hours a day throughout the school year to provide teacher-directed assistance to students, read stories to children from the 1,000 volume library (which is periodically rotated by the Erie County Library) and attend YMCA-sponsored movies with the children.

The Community is our Campus TOUCH Points More than 30 LECOM Erie Medical Students earned SOMA TOUCH points this year by completing at least 50 hours of community service. This past year, the students participating in the TOUCH Point program committed time and effort to service projects totaling nearly 9000 hours.
