7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Weekly Lessons - 3

What is a Paradigm? The way we think about and see things; a mental map.

PARADIGMS OF SELF When you look in the mirror, what image do you see of yourself?

PARADIGMS OF OTHERS What paradigms do some people have for their lives? Where do they place the most importance?

Friend Centered Friends are important but they should never become your center. They can be fickle Sometimes they are fake Some may talk behind your back They may make new friendships and forget about yours You may compromise your standards or change them

Stuff-Centered Sometimes we see the world through the lens of possessions or “stuff.”

Boyfriend/Girlfriend-Centered The more you center your life on someone, the more unattractive you become to that person.

School-Centered Our education is vital to our future and should be a top priority … we must be careful not to let [it] take over our lives.

Parent-Centered Your parents can be your greatest source of love and guidance and you should respect and honor them, but centering your life on your parents and living to please them above everything else can become a real nightmare.

Other Possible Centers Sports/hobbies Heroes Enemies Work Self

What is a principle? A fundamental truth that is timeless

Principle-Centered The Real Thing Examples: Honesty Service Love Hard Work Respect Etc.

Baby Steps Write a paragraph that explains a negative paradigm you might have of yourself, such as “I’m not outgoing.” Explain how you might change that paradigm. Write a paragraph that explains what means the most to you. Explain if you give that that most effort. Why or why not? Write a paragraph that explains why should you value principles? List ten principles that you think a good /respectable person should have.
