Objective: Students will complete “The Cask of Amontillado” Pre-Reading worksheet and LINCS vocabulary worksheet in order to build background knowledge, determine the definition of unfamiliar words, and become familiar with vocabulary. Warm Up #1: On your warm up sheet, answer the following questions in complete sentences. Please be prepared to share. Have you ever gotten revenge on someone for something they did to you? Why did you feel a need to get revenge? What did you do? How does revenge make you feel if you’re caught? If you’re not caught?

Let’s Look at Some Vocabulary… Amontillado Virtuoso Preclude Motley Retribution Aperture Mason Cask Take a few minutes to complete “The Cask of Amontillado” Vocabulary Worksheet. Definitions 1. The amontillado was saved for the special occasion, and all of the guest enjoyed drinking the rare wine. Amontillado: ( noun) a rare variety of rare sherry wine 2. The late Jimi Hendrix, a guitarist virtuoso, is considered one of the most talented musicians ever. Virtuoso: (noun) a prodigy or expert 3. Superheroes always try to preclude the evil plots that their villains concoct. Preclude: (verb) prevent or rule out 4. Sasha had on such a motley bunch of neon clothes that my eyes hurt! Motley: (adjective) multi-colored

Definitions… Some consider the death penalty is retribution while others believe it is cruel and unusual punishment. Retribution: ( noun ) justice or revenge The hallway was completely dark until a beam of light shined through an aperture in the wall. Aperture : (noun) a hole through which light can shine The Taj Mahal, which is made mostly of marble, was probably constructed by hundreds of stone masons. Mason: (noun) one who works with stone to build When my grandmother makes big batches of root beer, she puts them in casks in her basement to preserve the root beer. Casks : (noun) large barrels for storing liquid
