1 Shaping the future of healthcare Technology can provide a national platform for equity and access to quality care for all Australians Over 85% of nurses already use computers in support of their work Computing is becoming more accessible – at the patients bedside, on the road and in the patients home NEHTA’s role is to establish interconnectivity between computing solutions that support your work activities

2 Healthcare reform E ‑ health contributes directly to improving safety and quality in healthcare The widespread adoption of e ‑ health enables better value for money from current levels of health expenditure E-health was featured at the 2020 Summit

3 Individual Electronic health records It is proposed that Australia will have a national system of Individual electronic health records The benefits are significant, and need to be well understood

4 Focus for implementation in 2008 This year NEHTA will change its focus from developing standards to demonstrating how the standards can be applied in practice We will be working with  Consumers  Clinicians  All Australian Governments  Software companies The Clinical leads program will ensure that our specifications will work in the clinical environment A clinical online network is being established

5 Making it real National e ‑ health implementations will start with the following priority areas:  Discharge summaries  Pathology  Referrals (including specialist letters and notifications)  Medication management
