 LCPS is phasing in a 6 th year of foreign language study in French, German, Latin, and Spanish. For students who began level 1 in school year, the 5 th year of study in will be a pre-Advanced Placement course.

 The student should have a C average or better to advance to the next level.  Student should seek current teacher’s recommendation before advancing to the next level.  Communication with teachers, parents, and guidance counselors is key.

In order to graduate with an advanced diploma a student must have at least 3 years of one language or 2 years of 2 languages. For example, Dan takes Spanish 1, 2 and 3 and Stephanie takes Latin 1 and 2 and German 1 and 2. Both will receive advanced diplomas. Joanne takes French 1 – 6 AP and gets into Yale!

 Please know that some upper echelon schools (UVA, William and Mary) expect a minimum of 4 years of 1 language.  Please check with the schools to which you apply to see which languages they accept for foreign language credit.
