Weather vs. Climate Weather: The general condition of the atmosphere at a particular time and place. Climate: The general weather conditions over many years.

What is air? Air is a mixture of gaseous elements and compounds Those elements are Nitrogen, Oxygen and Argon Other compounds include Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 and Water H 2 O)

What determines weather? –Lots of things determine why we have weather and where our weather comes from. –One MAJOR factor that contributes to weather everywhere is AIR PRESSURE or ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE.

ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE This is defined as the PRESSURE exerted on a surface by the ATMOSPHERE. When measuring pressure, scientists use three different types of units; ATMOSPHERES (atm), millimeters or inches of MERCURY, or MILLIBARS. The instrument that scientists use to measure ATMOSPHERIC (AIR) PRESSURE is called the BAROMETER.

AIR PRESSURE DEMOS In order to do demonstrations about air pressure today, we are going to use a VACUUM. This is NOT the device that your mom uses to clean your room! Instead, the purpose of a vacuum is to __________ air pressure.

PREDICT: What, if any, changes will you see when shaving cream is placed into a vacuum and the air pressure is reduced? When the pressure is restored? OBSERVE: EXPLAIN:
