Directions for Webquest You will be completing 5 tasks on the following slides. In order for the links to be “live” you need to view the show, not just click through it. Please record the answers on your own paper.

Task #1 Go to link on start of WWI and write a brief description of the start of WWI. What is a stalemate? Go to this definition of stalemate and write down the definition.

Task #2 Go to this chapter on trench warfare to answer the following questions. How many miles of trenches were dug by each side? Scroll down to the diagram of trench system and do a sketch of the drawing. Pick 3 facts from the “trench facts” list on the right. What do the facts tell you about life in the trenches? What is “no man’s land?”

Task #3 Take a look at this description of total war. How does the text define it? Take a look at the statistics on war casualties and answer the following questions. (note: bottom of chart is mislabeled-should say Central Powers) What country has the highest % for “casualties as % of war.” What side had a higher % of loss-Allied or Central? What is the overall % of loss for all countries? How do you think this casualty rate impacted the treaty process?
