Background “Shippers, transport users and operators attach particular importance to the skills, knowledge and competencies of the personnel involved in transport and related logistics decisions. However, the supply of transport and logistics education and training provided by universities and other institutions in Europe varies greatly. Training today will prepare us for the mobility of tomorrow.” COM (2006) 336 – Freight Transport Logistics in Europe, the key to sustainable mobility

Why an ECASBA Diploma ? Demand from ECASBA members and externally Pre-existing ICS Logistics & Multimodal Diploma course Benefit from ICS reputation for provision of maritime education Ensure practical, relevant course content Network of ICS Distance Learning Centres for delivery Revenue earning/profile raising opportunity

Who does what ? ECASBA: Provides direct access to European institutions Leads on Marco Polo application Gives “European” credibility ICS: Develops and delivers course Ensures accreditation with appropriate body (ODLQC) Establishes DLC’s Awards diploma

Who is the course aimed at ? “Training should in no way be confined to managerial level…lifelong learning and training should encompass all layers in the logistics sector to boost the overall performance.” COM (2006) 336 – Freight Transport Logistics in Europe, the key to sustainable mobility Main ECASBA targets: 3 rd and 4 th party logistics providers high volume manufacturing importers and exporters transport providers in road, rail and sea It is anticipated candidates will be in the senior operational and clerical and junior supervisory grades.

Where are we now/what next ? Preparatory work on course and Marco Polo application started February 2007 Next stage: –undertake survey of market to ascertain level of demand –liaise with Distance Learning Centres on course delivery –Apply for Marco Polo funding under 2008 call
