DAAC 2307 Additive Family Intervention Family Genograms

 A genogram is a map that provides a graphic picture of family structure And emotional process over time. It was developed by Murray Bowen, M.D., as a part of his family systems theory.  A complete genogram should include: 1. Names and ages of all family members 2. exact dates of birth, marriage, separation, divorce, death, and other significant life events 3. Notations with dates, occupation, places of residence, illness 4. Information on 3 or more generations

Symbol Explanation  The index person is the client, or student in this case.  You can draw the deceased person by either an X in the circle or square( as the texbook states) or blackened. For these genograms we will use an X.

Directions in creating the Genogram  It will make the project less complicated if you work on one generation at a time.  Most of the time it’s helpful to start with your generation. That generation will include all your siblings and their significant others and children. Remember to note any substance abuse, medical, mental conditions.  Next, move up to the previous generation-your parents. Draw your parents and all their siblings. Be sure and separate the two families, usually women on right and man on left. Note same conditions as on your line.  Next, bring lines up from your parents to their parents. Follow the same procedure as above.  The following slide gives an example of a genogram. Yours does not have to look exactly like this one. This example does not have the names, medical conditions or substance history which yours needs to have on it.

Genogram Example

Submitting the Genogram  There are several ways to create and send your genogram:  use power point program- it to me  use WORD- it to me  hand draw the diagram and then either fax or mail it to me.  there are also programs you can get online that can help you create your genogram and you can then it to me
