Q U E S T I O N 4 Who would be the audience for your media product?

T A R G E T A U D I E N C E Our chosen classification is a 15. Myself and my group went onto the website to choose our classification, and this site provided us with everything that we needed to know of particular age rated films. We chose our Thriller to fall under this particular classification because it contains mostly everything that you could potentially see in a 15 rated film. These would be things such as drug taking, discriminatory language or behaviour and so on. Also, our sequence is a sub genre of a psychological thriller, therefore, it has a complex narrative. However, this does not limit our audience, because under 16 year olds are more unlikely to watch a Thriller, and would probably watch a Horror instead. We have chosen a 15 over an 18 classification because we do not have any strong, verbal language or drug abuse. We have no scenes of sexual violence, nor strong blood or gore. Therefore, it was easy to choose a 15 over an 18. Furthermore, as our film is conventional of it’s genre, it should attract a wide audience of both genders, and although our film is an independent film, we could have the potential to go international, but this isn’t something we are able to predict until we know of the films success after the release date and box office gross. An example of this is “Monsters”.

C O R E A U D I E N C E Our core audience is for young people between the ages 15 and 20, this is due to the relatable content it has within the film. Typically, it would be young males, more than females who like high tensed films such as Se7en and Collateral (because Laurie is held hostage unknowingly until later on in the film) who would watch our film, as it would have similar content. Our audience would be classically British as we have iconic British locations in our film. People would be interested in our film because it could include people’s hometown such as Brighton, so we people may find it attractive straight away. Our film could have the potential to go far, however, this is our core audience. As our main characters in the film, are a similar age to our core audience, is beneficial because again, it is something young people may relate to, and something that does occur in everyday situations, with them, or with people they know.

B R O A D E R A U D I E N C E I would like to think that we would attract a bigger audience than just our core audience. The things I would like to appeal, and interest people are things such as the culture of the modern day 21 st century of youths, and for people to understand that although we have British gangs, that not every young person is the same; some want futures (Laurie’s persona). However, this may not attract older viewers because it is quite obviously targeted at the young. Young adults, we would like to think, would enjoy this film as it’s something that can they can easily relate to. Furthermore, we would love for people to see the potential future careers for our production team, actors and so on, and for people to see an insight to “Clorencenna Productions” to see what we can bring to the industry. As “Follower” is set in Brighton, with iconic landmarks such as Brighton Pier, this would automatically attract an audience, from people of different ages. This would be our niche UK audience. Due to our main character having a similar persona to Vincent from Collateral, this may attract a wider audience, because people who don’t usually watch Thrillers, they may just see it due to the similar characters. In the film, we could even possibly include a famous star, however, this could make our film mainstream, which we would not have the budget to provide them with their wages.

T Y P I C A L A U D I E N C E M E M B E R This is James Lohan. He is an 18 year old, single, male who spends most of his time socialising with his friends – day and night. He lives in Birmingham, but regularly visits Brighton to stay with his brother whose 21. He has a big group of friends who he meets on a regular basis, clubbing and pubbing. He is the sensible friend, who, as well as having a good time, makes sure everyone else is okay, as a few of his friends take things to far when it comes to alcohol. When his at home, he tends to play on his PS4 or XBOX 360, playing crime and drug abuse games such as Call of Duty. As well as working in retail part time in Topman, he likes to go home, relax and put on a film. His favourite films are Sin City, The Bourne Ultimatum and Taken. He loves Thrillers more so than any other film and as soon as a new Thrill seeking film hits the cinemas, he will be there to see it, no matter the storyline. When it comes to TV Programmes, he likes to watch a good drama series with his mum, things such as Broadchurch. Like said at first, he loves socialising, whether that be in clubs, pubs, or festivals. James’ favourite type of music is club music, and occasionally the pop odd song (he was hesitant to admit). I think that James’ would enjoy “Follower” because he comes across to be a stereotypical teen, and can relate to Laurie, as his friends have had experience with drug abuse – he may find it intriguing how people cope with the situation in different ways.
