February 27 th - Bellwork 1.Do groups of different cultures sometimes get into conflict? 2. Why? 3. What is an ethnic group?

One piece of paper and a pencil (or pen) Turn to page 370.

Social Studies notes Write Eastern Europe on the top line. Write An ethnic group is a group of people that share a common culture. Then, skip a line and write Yugoslavia below it. (read page ) In Yugoslavia, violence between different ethnic groups led to years of warfare and the violent breakup of the country into 6 different countries. (View video)

A Story…. Will and Sam are very different from each other. They must sit next to each other in class, but it is not what they prefer. They don’t have the same friends, nor do they have anything to talk about between them. They both have their own friends. Most of Will’s friends are sitting in a group without him and most of Sam’s are sitting in a separate group on the other side of the room. Their very strict teacher made them sit beside each other. The teacher is so strict, she never lets them interact with each other. The teacher is always watching them; no matter what they are doing.

A Story… ….then one day…. They learned that they were receiving a new teacher because the other one got a job at another school. The new teacher allows the children to govern themselves and sit where they want. What do you think Will and Sam will do?

Eastern Europe This story will directly relate to Eastern Europe. The Soviet Union forced ethnic groups to live side by side under the same country for about 45 years; whether they got along or not. Turn to page 359 and examine the map. Which countries were dominated or controlled by the Soviet Union? Was Czechoslovakia? Hold your place here and turn to the map in the back of the book (pg. R53) Compare the two maps. What different countries do you now see in Eastern Europe?

Czechoslovakia Next, skip a line and write Czechoslovakia. Read page 362. Underneath Czechoslovakia write –consisted of two major ethnic groups: Czechs and Slavs. –dominated by the Communist Soviet Union for almost 50 years, –peacefully separated into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Comparing… Next, write: How did the breakup of Yugoslavia differ from the breakup of Czechoslovakia? Answer it.
