2 Meet Tony Muscatello Director of Mission Support since 2000 Commander of MDRS Crew 1 (Week 2) and MDRS Crew 12 Ph.D. Chemist working on in-situ resource utilization (using Mars resources to make rocket propellant, oxygen, metals, etc.)

3 MDRS Essentials Send airline ticket receipt (keep a copy) to Tony – Receive $500 travel scholarship If driving, send notice to Tony – Receive $250 advance, rest when return home Print out and read crew briefing Study Hab OpsManual and other documents on Engineering Team Web Site Review Crew Packing List and other documents on Mars Society MDRS Site

4 MDRS Travel Arrive by noon at the SLC Airport Comfort Inn – Use free shuttle bus Meet rest of crew Pick up V'ger (Silver 1991 Plymouth Voyager with trailer) Shop for food/supplies (save food and gas receipts) – List provided by previous crew – Send in receipts for reimbursement Drive to Hanksville, Utah – Make recommended fuel stops Go to Whispering Sands Motel Verify safe arrival with Don Foutz Proceed to MDRS

5 MDRS – Major Components Two-story, 900 sq. ft cylindrical Hab (8m x 9m tall) – Based on Mars Direct Habitat (Robert Zubrin) – Lower deck: EVA prep room, bathroom, and lab – Upper deck: Common area, six staterooms, galley, and attic; several webcams – Propane heater and range; h/c running water – Six analog spacesuits (backpacks, helmets, coveralls, gloves, boots and gaiters) – Great view out the portholes! Simulated pressurized tunnels to GreenHab and Engineering Area GreenHab water recycling unit/Greenhouse

12 MDRS – Priorities in Order ● #1: Safety ● Make sure it's safe BEFORE you do it! ● Includes protecting equipment ● #2: Sim ● Stay in Mars simulation except for emergencies ● #3: Science ● Accomplish your scientific objectives ● #4: Public Outreach ● Important, but lower priority ● #5: Comfort ● Just like a real Mars crew!

13 MDRS – Standard Routine Submit daily reports and six photos via Direcway satellite link – Commander's check in – Engineering report, use web form – Geology report – Biology report – EVA report – Commander's summary/Journalist report Check-in due at 7pm MST Comm window open 7-9pm MST Submit to address to be provided All reports due by 9pm MST

14 MDRS – End of Rotation Thursday – inventory food and supplies Thursday – submit shopping list for next crew Friday – clean Hab and submit photos Saturday – send crewmember with V'ger to SLC Saturday – new crew drives to MDRS Saturday night/Sunday morning – train new crew Sunday morning – new crewmember drives old crew to SLC and returns to Hab Modify as needed for other start/finish days

16 MDRS – Emergency Procedures Injuries – Apply First Aid if appropriate Fire – use fire extinguishers if safe to do so Evacuate if not safe to stay Take injured/seriously ill persons to Whispering Sands Motel – dial 911 Notify Mission Support if possible Avoid dangerous situations in the first place

17 MDRS – Important Do's and Don'ts Do stay in Mars simulation once started Do communicate on time Do submit all reports and photos Do clean up the Hab at end of rotation Do drive ATVs slowly and safely Don't contact Don Foutz directly Don't rewire the Hab! Don't store fragile equipment outside
