Lesson 1 The Reproductive System
Do Now Why is it important to understand the functioning of both the male and female reproductive systems?
Male Reproductive System Sperm- male reproductive cells that start being produced during puberty. Produced in the testes. Semen- the mixture of sperm and seminal fluid. Ejaculation- Muscular contractions that force semen through the urethra and out of the body.
Male Reproductive System Urethra- a tube that carries urine and sperm to the outside of the body Penis- the external sexual organ Testes- or testicles, are two small glands that produce sperm and hormones. Scrotum- a muscular sac that contains the testes.
Problems of the Male Reproductive System Inguinal hernia- a tissue tear that allows part of the intestine to push into the scrotum. Caused from heavy lifting. Sterility- inability to produce enough healthy sperm to reproduce. STD’s- infections that are spread during sexual contact. Cancer- uncontrolled cell growth that destroys healthy tissue.

Female reproductive system Ovaries-produces and contains the eggs, along with hormones estrogen. Fallopian tubes-carries the eggs from the ovaries to the uterus Uterus-shelters and nourishes the fetus Endometrium- the lining of the uterus Cervix-the opening of the uterus Vagina-a muscular passageway from the uterus to the outside of the body. Labia-layers of tissue that cover the opening of the vagina
The Menstrual Cycle Ovulation- the release of one mature egg cell each month Menstruation-the flow of the uterine lining out of the body. Menstrual cycle-the sequence of events in the system that occurs from one menstruation to another. Menopause- a period marking the end of a female’s reproductive years. Between 40-60
Problems of the female reproductive system Premenstrual syndrome(PMS)- a collection of physical and emotional changes before and during menstruation. Toxic shock syndrome-serious bacterial infection associated with incorrect tampon use. Can cause death if not treated Infertility-inability to reproduce because of blocked fallopian tubes or failure to produce eggs. Ovarian cysts- growths on the ovaries. Any pain,swelling,or bloating should be checked by a doctor. STD’s and Cancer-
