CENF secondary beam study group 1 st meeting - 7 th May 2013 M. Calviani (EN/STI)

Presentations today 2  (this one)  Presentation by S. Girod  Status of the 3D CATIA modelling of the target building  Presentation by H. Vincke  Requirements from radioprotection points of view  Presentation by S. Hutchins  Requirements from general safety 7 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group

Present status and design 37 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group  Preliminary ideas in collaboration with N. Baddams  Correct soil height and longitudinal/vertical distances  Crude representation of concrete/shielding configuration (not necessarily overlapping edges)  Unique volume target+DP (He recirculation) EDMS link

Target hall – transversal cut 47 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group Technical gallery: -Needed?  BA81 should be considered as baseline? -Primary cooling circuit? Access ramp -Max slope acceptable for transport assumed ~10% -Max length ~33 m  ~3.3 meters  h Earth ground around not needed! Service pit Target vault Ventilation area 1 Ventilati on area 2

Secondary beam – top view 57 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group Max 33 m from existing road Material access Personal access + control room to be still integrated HS surface building not optimized, potentially not needed (this big…)

Priorities for integration (my point of view) 6  Definition of a baseline for alignment procedures: 1. Target/horns installed on “service modules” hung from above the shielding blocks ...leave open the possibility for a reflector position change 2. Target/horns placed at the bottom of the trench on support tables 3. Target/horn “plug-in” with fiducials on the target vault (a-la- T2K)?  Realistic/acceptable margins between shielding blocks  Minimize line of sights to reduce radiation streaming 7 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group

Priorities for integration (my point of view) 7  Definition of the service rooms and cables/pipe penetration through the service pit  CV/EL input mandatory  How many levels in the service rooms & stairs/trap access?  Do we need a technical gallery from a potential BA81? 1. Central EL installation for the whole installation, or… 2. Dedicated EL infrastructure close to target area?  Siting of primary cooling circuits  Single HX: potential radioactive water pipes going from the target vault/service rooms to BA81  Intermediate IHX (additional costs)? 7 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group

Power consumptions 87 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group + 20 kW service building above HS/pit1/ kW general infrastructure ~690 kW  ~1.1 MVA Total power needed

EN/EL preliminary requirements 97 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group 2x 2MVA transformer Courtesy J. Devine (EN/EL) external internal  External:  Concrete slabs, 40 cm thick (w/ crane access for installation)  Ducts and draw pit to allow cable connection  Max length transformer vs. LV cubicles = 50 m  Internal:  1 m raised floor min  3 m min heigth for LV and 4.5 m for HV circuit breakers  Life safety power  Externally located with fire rated cables 80 m 2 27 m 2

Various items 10  Design for shielding blocks on top of the beam elements  Try to minimize the use of “specially-machined blocks”  Maximize the use of existing or standard size cast Fe blocks (844 or 1684)  Study the possibility to procure FNAL “blue blocks” for the fixed part of the shielding  NB:  Important to take into account dismantling needs/requirements from the design stage  Important to consider enough space for a remote handling operation area  Dedicated control room 7 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group

What need to be cooled (and how?) 117 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group Element Energy deposited [GeV/pr] Energy deposited [kJ/pulse] (4.5e13 POT) Deposited power [kW] (repetition rate of 3.6s) Target (graphite) 1.24E Horn (internal and external conductor) 1.13E Reflector (internal and external conductor) 7.01E HS – carbon core 2.03E HS – iron around the core 9.47E HS – aluminium (top and bottom) 1.61E HS – water (top and bottom pipes) 1.04E E HS in total E Fe shielding above the target (inside the helium vessel) 6.49E Fe shielding (below the chase) 2.03E Fe chase side shielding (both sides equal contribution) 3.94E HS (secondary) 2.23E E-01 Helium (inside the chase) 1.89E E-02 Helium (inside the Decay Pipe) 4.64E E-02 Fe – decay pipe wall 2.28E Fe – helium vessel wall 1.01E Concrete shielding around the decay pipe 5.33E Concrete shielding (the first part of the DP plus iron layer) 1.40E ElementPower Target2.5 kW Horn/Reflector (only beam)4 kW Hadron absorber65 kW Trench Fe shielding25 kW He vessel structure (5 cm thick)20 kW Decay pipe Fe structure45 kW Decay pipe concrete10 kW

What need to be cooled (and how?) 12  Target cooling system   baseline is pressurized He gas  Horn/reflector   water (He loop for the magnetic field volume)  Hadron absorber   water (CNGS-like) – sandwich between C (or Al) and Fe 7 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group NB: graphite should match the DP diameter (3x3 m 2 )!

What need to be cooled (and how?) 13  Trench Fe shielding   water – TAX like solution (Fe in contact with a cooled plate)  He vessel   water – TAX like solution   forced convection with He circulation (N not admissible due to NO x formation)  Heat pipes could be used to cool the He vessel towards the Fe heat sink? 7 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group

What need to be cooled (and how?) 14  DP  If needed: forced air convection through pipes embedded in the concrete shielding and running through the length of the DP (a-la-MiniBooNE) 7 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group

Priorities for the SB design 15  He-vessel configuration and construction  Alignment (for target and horn)  Review between STI (target) and MEF (horns)  Location of the hadron absorbers cooling station 1. On top of the HS, dedicated building (cooling & ventilation station) 2. Main C&V stations in the target hall, pipes and ducts parallel to decay pipe?  Comments/feedback from DGS/RP & DGS/SEE?  Access to  -pits  “comfortable” access (lateral stair) or “crinoline”? 7 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group

For next meeting 16  Proposals for next meetings, extend the invitation to:  EN/CV – definition and clarification of space  GS/ASE – definition of access systems  TE/VSC – clarification of interface between primary and secondary beam line  DSOs/RSOs?  GS/FB – important to take smoke extraction and fire safety requirements from the beginning 7 May 2013CENF neutrino production area study group
