What is Domestic Violence? By U.S. Department of Justice Physical abuse includes hitting, slapping, shoving, grabbing, pinching or any other physical act to harm the partner Another type of domestic violence is sexual abuse Emotional abuse is a way of controlling a partner by diminishing their self-esteem Economic abuse includes controlling financial resources or ruining credit, so that a partner is financially dependent on the abuser Psychological abuse means causing fear through intimidation Article 1

As Domestic Violence forces women, children into homelessness, shelters work to help By Thomas Betar Domestic violence is linked to homelessness among women and children Often victims of domestic violence need to flee their home, but they have nowhere to go Domestic violence shelters can save lives, by giving victims somewhere safe to run to Many women flee suddenly under emergency circumstances, without any economic or housing resources Article 2

1.3 million women are domestic violence victims each year A majority of homeless women are domestic violence victims Shelters often have to turn away women and children because they are full Domestic violence often involves physical abuse, stalking and sexual assaults Domestic Violence and Homelessness By the National Coalition for the Homeless Article 3

Domestic Violence By National Alliance to End Homelessness Perpetrators of domestic violence often isolate their victim from friends and family, eliminating their support system Many victims of domestic violence do not have a source of steady income, due to the control their partner had over them Victims often suffer from anxiety, panic disorder or depression as a result of the abuse Article 4

Domestic Violence and Homelessness By American Civil Liberties Union Women often stay in abusive relationships or return to them because they don’t have a safe alternative Crowded abuse shelters limit these options further Some landlords have “zero tolerance for crime” policies, which can result in victims being evicted when domestic violence occurs Some landlords refuse to rent to domestic violence victims Some victims may fail to report instances of domestic violence for fear of eviction Article 5
