Introduction New Synergies Strategic Plan Task Force Campus-wide discussions

Starting from Strategic Plan “ Inform public policy and provide informed leadership to policy discussions by way of a public policy institute that conducts analyses and impact assessments, and promotes coordination between large-scale research and economic development, leading to increased investment funds and impact on regional, national, and global economies. ”

Faculty-driven Visibility and impact Global perspective and presence Multidisciplinary Academic excellence Enriched learning Further tripartite mission of Purdue Guiding Principles

Proposed Activities Conducting/supporting high-impact research Enhancing learning about policy Taking engagement global Your ideas…

Benefits to Purdue Community Faculty –Policy expertise, impact assistance Students –New skills, connections –application of ideas to practical problems Alumni –Higher visibility of Purdue For all, including public –New ideas and better use of resources

Possible Funding University seed money for first steps Development targets for external funding: –Named positions (grad fellowships, faculty chairs) –Named facilities (buildings, rooms) –Named programs (publications, internships) Endowments (e.g. Regenstrief Center Model) Tuition for Master’s degree in a policy school Alumni and donor enthusiasm

Next Steps Finalize mission/vision statements Develop a more concrete set of ideas Develop a funding /staged development plan Secure seed money to hire a Director Coordinate existing resources Identify/define high impact areas Nurture new ideas and areas of impact

We want your input! We are still brainstorming Soon we will have to make some decisions Please let us know your ideas and concerns

Focus Areas In what areas (e.g. healthcare, energy, environment, security, social policy and so on) is Purdue poised to make a noteworthy contribution through a Public Policy Institute?

What activities should the Institute undertake to make this contribution? Should we offer a M.S. degree in public policy, as in the past? Should we create a policy school? Other activities that will help the University stimulate policy research?

Faculty Participation and Incentives Do you have feedback on our ideas and other suggestions on how to organize and provide incentives for faculty participation in the institute?
