3 kinds of poetry: lyric: a short poem, uttered by a single speaker, which expresses the thoughts and emotions of that speaker dramatic poetry: drama written in poetry; OR poetry written for or as if for performance by actors, with characters speaking in a specific situation narrative poetry: poetry which tells a story

dramatic monologue: a poem uttered by a speaker who is clearly identified as someone other than the poet, speaking in a specific fictionalized situation, usually to an auditor; which usually reveals character of the speaker auditor: a more or less clearly defined, fictionalized person who is listening to the speaker within a particular fictionalized context
