Listening Journal

A Moment When… Please write about three people you find to be great listeners. What makes them a great listener? How do you feel about these people in general?

Yesterday… After focusing on the concept of listening yesterday, did you notice yourself paying more attention to your listening skills throughout the day? Even if you did not, please reflect on an instance during yesterday during which you exhibited positive listening behaviors. What were they? What was the impact on the situation due to your positive listening skills?

Reprieve Today you will be reading and writing in class; thus, you have no listening journal entry for the day.

The Purpose of Listening As a species, humans have adapted over the years to be able to identify a range of information about other people and the world they inhabit based upon their assignment of meaning to sounds. What has been the value of this adaptation? How does it help us to survive?

How Do You…? How do you determine what’s important to remember and what is not? Why do you forget information that you know is important to remember? What types of methods do you use to remember important information?

Persuasive Speaking When someone persuasively speaks, be they a lecturer, a politician, or someone selling a product, how do you determine if you agree with them or not? What things make you believe them? What things make you question them and possibly disagree with them?

Lean on Me When you’re having a hard time with something, who do you usually go to to talk to? Who do you steer clear of? What do you want someone to do when you need to talk about a tough issue? What do you not want someone to do when you need to talk about a tough issue?

Music & You Do you believe that the music someone listens to defines them in some way? Why do you listen to music? Why do you like the music you like?

Listen to Me What is the most important thing you’ve learned about listening throughout the past two weeks? What will you take with you to improve you as a listener? TURN IN YOUR LISTENING JOURNAL WITH YOUR NAME ON IT
