Solidarity Movement in Poland

Lech Wałęsa  One of the world’s best known Poles.  Enhanced Poland’s international stature.  Leader of the solidarity movement and led the Poles out of communism.  Worked as a humble electrician in the 80s.  Was awarded the Noble Peace Prize in  Contributed to the end of communism and Europe and an end to the Cold War  President in 1983

Lech Wałęsa: President of Poland In 1989 he ran for President and won by a landslide even though he had poor campaign techniques. He led the country through industrial privatization, first set of totally free parliamentary elections in 1991, and strengthened international relations. He lost his re-election campaign in 1995 but still remains active in Polish politics and does not hold a position in the government office.

How It All Began...  In 1970, Stalin’s Shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, was the center of huge and violent demonstrations against the government’s decisions to increase food prices.  Six years later Wałęsa was fired and became an anti-government union activist, he was apart of the Workers Defense Committee (KOR).  In 1980 the food prices were raised again and more than 100,000 workers went on strike.  The workers seized control of the yard and Lech Wałęsa scaled the shipyard fence and joined the workers inside. The picture above is of Lech Wałęsa speaking the workers at the shipyard.
