INTRO TO IMPERIALISM

INTRODUCTION TO IMPERIALISM EQ: Why does the U.S. decide to adopt an interventionist foreign policy in the late 19 th century? What long term benefits and drawbacks do you envision as a result of the territories acquired during the Spanish American War? I.Do Now: Using your homework from last night/ prior knowledge, define imperialism. II.IMPERIALISM: III.FOREIGN POLICY:

PREVIOUS HISTORY MONROE DOCTRINE: After Spain and Portugal defeated Napoleon in 1815, European powers wanted to reclaim heir former colonies in Latin America Russians were also trying to establish trading posts in CA Spain tried to get back old colonial areas Russia pushed from west U.S. had to do something U.S. wanted Mexico and Cuba Russia threatened U.S. trade with China Doctrine Stated : Monroe warned all powers outside of W. Hemisphere to not interfere with Western Hemisphere Affairs U.S. would consider it an action “dangerous to our peace and safety” U.S. would not involve self with European matters

MANIFEST DESTINY AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION Manifest Destiny: s a phrase that expressed the belief that the US had a mission to expand spreading its form of democracy and freedom advocates said that expansion was not only good, but that it was obvious “manifest” and inevitable “destiny”. Global Competition with Europe: European Nation had been establishing colonies for centuries. (Africa and Asia especially) By the early 20 th century, only two countries in all of Africa- Ethiopia and Liberia- remained independent

4 CORNERS ACTIVITY: FOREIGN POLICY 1. IMPERIALISM IS JUSTIFIED IF IT MEANS THAT IT WILL IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE COLONIZED. Strongly agree/ Agree/ Strongly Disagree/ Disagree 2. Survival of the fittest applies to countries if a country needs another territory for economic strategic purposes, it should do everything in its power to take it. Strongly agree/ Agree/ Strongly Disagree/ Disagree

BRAINSTORM REASONS THE US WOULD BECOME AND IMPERIALIST NATION 1.Desire for military strength 2. Thirst for new markets - 3. Belief in Cultural Superiority

CSI: 1887 This woman stood in the way of America being able to dole out her countries natural resources & benefit it strategically from her country’s location. Who is she & why did she represent such a powerful threat to U.S. expansionism?

CAUSES OF THE SPANISH- AMERICAN WAR (APRIL –AUGUST 1898) American interest in Cuba Cuban Revolution against Spanish imperialism (1895) Jose Marti (guerilla campaign and deliberate destruction of property ex. American owned sugar mills and plantations) Marti counted on provoking US intervention to help the rebels achieve Cuba Libre !! Concentration camps in Cuba by General Weyler (300 thousand rural Cuban population) Yellow Journalism and Newspaper Circulation in the U.S Sensational style of writing by William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, which exaggerates the news to lure and engage readers so people purchase more papers!!! DeLome Letter: Spanish ambassador’s leaked letter which mocked President McKinley who had been trying to avoid war with Spain Explosion of the U.S.S. Maine on 2/15/1898: immediate blame placed on Spain, even though it was never determined what caused the eruption
